Inner Elbow Pain

Pain on the inside of the elbow is usually golfer's elbow (flexor tendon irritation) or an ulnar nerve issue. Learn the patterns and when to get assessed.

Overview

Pain on the inside of the elbow is most often golfer's elbow — irritation of the tendons that bend the wrist, which attach at the inner elbow bump (the medial epicondyle). The ulnar nerve also runs through this area, so tingling in the ring and little fingers can be part of the picture.

It usually develops with repeated gripping, wrist flexion, throwing or golf, and it responds to load management and strengthening.

What This Symptom Feels Like

  • Ache or sharp pain on the inside of the elbow
  • Pain with gripping, wrist flexion, throwing or golf swings
  • Pain that spreads down the inner forearm
  • Tenderness when pressing the inner elbow bump
  • Sometimes tingling or numbness in the ring and little fingers

Common Causes

Anatomy Usually Involved

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Is the pain on the bony bump on the inside of the elbow?
  • Is it worse with gripping, golf, throwing or wrist bending?
  • Is there tingling or numbness in the ring or little fingers?
  • Did it start after a throw, fall or repeated activity?
  • Is the elbow swollen, hot or unstable?

When It's Usually Minor

Inner elbow pain that follows repeated gripping or throwing, eases with load reduction, and improves with strengthening is the typical golfer's elbow pattern. Tingling that comes and goes with elbow position is common and usually settles too.

When To Seek Medical Care

  • Pain after a throwing injury or fall with instability, bruising or a pop
  • Persistent hand tingling, numbness or weakness
  • A hot, red or very swollen elbow
  • Pain that is not improving after several weeks of load management
  • An elbow that locks or catches

Self-Care Options

  • Reduce the provoking loads — lighter grips, modified golf grip, less throwing
  • Stretch gently with the golfer's elbow stretch
  • Avoid propping the elbow on hard surfaces if there is tingling
  • Use short-term pain relief if appropriate
  • Follow the general elbow loading principles

Common Questions

Is inner elbow pain golfer's elbow?

Most of the time, yes — the inner elbow bump is where the wrist-flexor tendons attach. But tingling in the ring and little fingers points to the ulnar nerve, which needs a slightly different approach.

Should I rest or exercise inner elbow pain?

Reduce the sharpest loads but keep strengthening progressively. Tendons respond to graded loading, not rest alone.

When should I worry about inner elbow pain?

Seek assessment for persistent hand tingling or weakness, pain after a throwing injury, or pain that is not improving after several weeks of sensible adjustment.
