Overview
The coracohumeral ligament is a broad band at the top of the shoulder joint. It is closely integrated with the capsule, rotator interval and nearby rotator cuff tendons rather than acting like an isolated cord.
Location
It begins near the base of the coracoid process and spreads toward the greater and lesser tubercles of the humerus.
Function
The ligament helps support the arm when it hangs at the side and contributes to control of rotation and inferior translation of the humeral head.
Common Injuries
It may be involved in capsular injury or shoulder instability. Thickening and reduced flexibility around the coracohumeral ligament and rotator interval are also associated with frozen shoulder.
Clinical Relevance
The ligament is one part of a larger stabilizing system. A scan finding here should be interpreted with shoulder movement, strength and symptoms.
