Overview

The rhomboid major and minor are paired muscles between your spine and shoulder blade. They pull the scapula inward and help keep it steady during reaching, rowing and carrying.

Location

  • Rhomboid minor sits higher, near the level of the base of the neck
  • Rhomboid major lies directly below it
  • Both sit beneath the trapezius

Origin, Insertion, Nerve Supply, and Action

  • Origin: Lower cervical and upper thoracic spinous processes
  • Insertion: Medial border of the scapula
  • Nerve supply: Dorsal scapular nerve, mainly C4–C5
  • Action: Retract and downwardly rotate the scapula; help secure it to the chest wall

Pain Referral Patterns

Discomfort is commonly described between the inner border of the scapula and the spine. Neck, rib, thoracic-joint and nerve problems can produce similar pain, so tenderness in this region does not automatically mean a rhomboid injury.

Clinical Relevance

Rhomboid strength is interpreted as part of the whole scapular system. Excessive “pinching back” is not always better; the scapula must also rotate and move freely during overhead activity.
